Today Rex & I tackle Skiddaw via a different, arguably more interesting route than the usual one from Gale Road. Starting at Dodd Wood, we head North through the woods before cutting back to climb the Ullock Pike - Long Side Ridge.
Then North East to Skiddaw, and return via Carl Side. 'Wainwright baggers' can easily add Dodd to this walk.
Newlands, Cat Bells, High Spy, Hindscarth, Robinson, Barrow, Causey Pike... Bassenthwaite, Grisedale Pike, Whinlatter Forest, Lord's Seat...
Please direct any comments about the visual aspect of Dodd to the Forestry Commission
Not the usual picture of Skiddaw - this is from the Western Side. If you look carefully on the close up you can see our planned ascent. The path starts on the right and snakes up and to the left. From this view many would decide on a different route but fortunately it's not quite as impossible or foolhardy as it looks...
If you view the RH pic full screen on computer you might be able to see a couple of people on Skiddaw North Top summit!
Rex patiently picture posing at the summit of Long Side, a little further along the ridge
And I am also pleased because this is the first time ever that I have had clear views from Skiddaw. The winds are cold and strong, but visibility is good
