The woodland path starts near to the road and then

starts to climb towards Ling How

We make a short detour to see 'Watches'

which is this arrangment of rocks

The path to 'The Edge' and Ullock Pike is intermittently steep but not too tricky

easily rival those from the higher summits of Skiddaw

We arrive at the crossroads near Carlside Tarn (completely dry)

and begin our ascent to Skiddaw

A quick look behind at our return route via Carl Side. We can see Braithwaite, Robinson (centre), Rowling End, Causey Ridge, Outerside...

No amount of photo-taking gets away from the fact that we have to continue up this path. Caution is required, it is steep and there are loose slippery stones

After making our way back to Carl Side Tarn via a different path off Skiddaw (equally tricky), we arrive at Carl Side, our last summit for today

This is a good spot to have our main break, and we rest for 15 mins out of the wind. A pleasant view of Coledale including Crag Hill and Grisedale Pike

We now have a bit of a trek to Dodd Wood, down this path

and then turning sharp right at 'White Stones'
