A mixed to poor weather forecast for today, but it should be dry so we set off on a 'Grisedale Tarn circuit'.
Starting from Patterdale, this hike takes in a gradual long ascent adjacent to Grisedale Beck. We then turn back towards Fairfield and Cofa Pike (optional), St Sunday Crag and Birks for the return to Patterdale.

After parking at the Hotel, the path takes us through a short wooded section

The valley is in sunshine, but it is cold. Low clouds on the fells ahead

Fairfield, St Sunday Crag - Image 5, May 07, 2026

The walking at this point is almost too easy - we don't get much impression of progress or ascent on these wide shallow paths

Fairfield, St Sunday Crag - Image 6, May 07, 2026

Almost impossible to get lost on this route so far, but nonetheless a handy sign to confirm that we are not going astray

Fairfield, St Sunday Crag - Image 7, May 07, 2026

We saw many red squirrels - not easy to get in a pic

As you can see, this section of the route is part of the famous C2C

Rex is doing very well considering that this is all new to him. However, he does prefer zigzagging to walking in a relatively straight line !

I wouldn't choose to mess with any of these. They were close to the path - fortunately they didn't approach

Just after this robust little footbridge, I stop to put on all my layers. The wind is buffeting all around us now

Rex closes his eyes against the wind as I layer up and put on the woolly hat

Ruthwaite Lodge, which means we're about 75% of the way to Grisedale Tarn

We rapidly arrive at Grisedale Tarn, which manages to look attractive in any weather.
The fell ahead is Seat Sandal. No trouble crossing on these useful stones

From near the col before we turn left to climb Fairfield (Hause Gap), there is a distant view of Grasmere and Windermere beyond

Looking back to Grisedale Tarn and part of our earlier approach path. The principal fell in view is Dollywaggon Pike

Nearly at the summit of Fairfield now, unfortunately in a windy whiteout

So after the summit pic, we rapidly descend

towards Cofa Pike, similarly shrouded

Some items to note here:
1) The direct descent that we took, NNW from Fairfield, is best avoided in my opinion. It has some very trick rocky sections. Best to first retrace to the West and take the other, smoother path
2) The entirety of Cofa Pike is a rocky scramble. Nothing technically challenging, but difficult
3) Both Fairfield and Cofa Pike can be easily skipped from this hike by taking a different path E from Grisedale Tarn towards Deepdale Hause
