Hay Stacks, a favourite of Wainwright, may lack impressive altitude but the hiker is compensated with an interesting summit area, wonderful views and tarns.
Hay Stacks sits at the South Eastern end of the Buttermere valley, and can be approached via Honister, Gatesgarth or Buttermere itself.
Hay Stacks is home to Innominate Tarn, which occupies a lovely setting. There are several summit peaks, including our favourite, a small knoll to the NW, from where the picture was taken.
There is another tarn near the summit, and if descending towards Honister or Warnscale Beck, you will also pass Blackbeck Tarn.
Hay Stacks can be climbed on its own, or as part of the High Stile Ridge, or even a 'round' including the Gables.
